5 Ways to Streamline Your Digital Marketing Practices

Let’s face it: marketing ain’t what it used to be. With digital marketing being the new norm and our big world getting smaller and smaller, stuff happens fast. Like, faster than fast. This makes it easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed when it comes to implementing good digital marketing practices for your own business, or for your clients.

But here’s where we encourage you to take a deep breath: we’ve come up with a few ways to streamline your digital marketing efforts so that scheduling content is a cinch.

(Okay, maybe not a cinch, but a whole lot easier.) Here’s how:

Create a Content Calendar—Then Use It

Creating a content calendar can be a huge time saver. It may not seem like it the first time you do it (disclaimer: it can take hours to plan out posts for just two weeks), but here’s what you need to do to make it work:

  • Only schedule two weeks at a time. Why? Because news moves fast, and social changes on a dime. Don’t waste your time and energy scheduling more than 10-14 days ahead, because we promise, you’ll end up replacing some posts and creating more work for yourself.
  • Plan a few posts a day, not the entire two weeks in one sitting. If anything can make you feel like your eyes are bleeding onto your keypad, it’s scheduling social. Make it easy and plan your calendar in increments, not all at once.

When you go to transfer your posts from your calendar to Hootsuite (or whatever platform you use to schedule media), it will be fast and easy—but the actual planning process that happens at calendar stage can be daunting if you try and do too much at once.

Also, make sure that content calendar that you’ve just created is actually used to schedule with. There have been so many times that we’ve spoken to businesses who take the time to plan, then ultimately end up ditching the plan and scheduling rogue.

What’s the point in spending valuable time crafting posts if you don’t end up using them? (Answer: there is zero point. So use them!)

Share an Editorial Calendar with Your Team

An editorial calendar is not to be confused with a content calendar. Whereas a content calendar holds all of your crafted content that will be transferred to your social media accounts, an editorial calendar is one that shows various tasks and the associated due dates and team members who are in charge of completing those tasks.

Sharing an editorial calendar can make your life much easier, but make sure you store your calendar in Google Drive or somewhere that makes it easy for your team to all make real-time edits. Saving a doc and passing it around is NOT a time-saving activity.

Streamline Everything

As in, have a copy of everything that you typically send clients updated and ready to go at all times. This way, when a new client is looking for more information on your business or someone wants a copy of your team’s latest social media strategy ideas, you can simply attach what you have ready.

(And not have to type and retype everything out for everyone under the sun—because typing takes time.)

Don’t be Afraid to Innovate and Create

As you work on digital marketing for your business or clients, make sure to make a mental note of what works for you and what doesn’t. If you think something would be easier to complete or produce better results if it were done in a different way, then make that change!

Don’t compromise your competency and effectiveness because you allow yourself to play by another’s rules. Make your own rules!

Take Advantage of Others’ Ah-Ha Moments

Additionally, if you stumble across something that has worked well for others, don’t hesitate to try it for yourself. As the adage goes, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. (Unless the wheel sucks—and then definitely reinvent it.)

Becoming involved in your community’s events is incredibly important for new businesses. In order to cultivate great relationships, you need to be authentic and consistent. Authenticity means that you project who you really are, and are genuine in your interactions with others. People can sniff out a fake a mile away, and by adopting the view that your business will be different because you’re different, you can make life simple and business easy by just being yourself.

Being consistent is also crucial to maintaining healthy business relationships. When you’ve gathered a small tribe of like-minded business owners who are supportive and pumped for you and your success, it’s important to show them that you are who they think you are—and this means being consistent.

Developing great relationships with potential customers and other Vancouver business owners is essential to your brand and the fate of your business. When done correctly, you’ve got nowhere to grow but up.

Spring Clean Your Social

It’s about that time of year when we all get up, shake off the dust, tip our heads to the sky and breathe in sunshine and warmth and vitamin D and the smell of cherry blossoms.

(And a lot of pollen, so if you have hayfever, maybe sip a little nettle tea, first.)

Springtime means getting our lazy, winter butts in gear and putting extra emphasis on productivity. Since social media plays a huge part in any businesses’ digital marketing strategy, consider spring cleaning your social—not just your office.

(But do that, too—cleaner offices inspire increased productivity in your employees. True story.)

Here are 5 ways to spring clean your social:

Purge Those Extra Accounts

We all have them—for Fresh + Fit, it’s Pinterest. We’ll totally admit it. We are NEVER on Pinterest. Like, ever. So why do we even have a Pinterest account?

Good question.

Remember this: your business does not need to be on Pinterest and Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and Snapchat and Google+ and Reddit. Choose 2-3 social forums and rock them. You cannot be efficient and productive by trying to manage a million social media accounts.

For most businesses, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are the biggies. Choose a couple, and let the rest go.

Create an Editorial Calendar

Are you still flying by the seat of your pants? Why? Life is easier with a plan, right? You don’t have to come up with great content and blog ideas on the spot—you’ll have already planned it all out!

A good rule of thumb is to create a new calendar each month. Keep the next 3 months or so in the background, and fill in events and other things as you go. By the end of each month, the following month will be almost done!

WAY easier, guys. Honestly.

Update Your Info + Images

When’s the last time you edited your social info and updated your profile pics and headers? If you’re using stale media, change it! In the last few months, we’ve had clients do the following:

  • Move locations
  • Add a phone number
  • Change an email address
  • Re-brand
  • Get trademarked
  • Merge with another business
  • Get new pro photos taken

These are all things that affect your profile on social! So make sure you’re up-to-date, and you’ll stay more relevant and easier to find for your clients.

Edit Who You’re Following

It’s a good idea to go through who you’re following once a year and make some changes. Many of us follow people or organizations or businesses that don’t make sense or have anything to do with what your business is about.

Remember, potential clients, customers, and other businesses frequently check social forums to see who you deem important enough to follow. If you’re spamming your own news feed by following accounts that don’t make sense, cut them out!

Stop it.

Be Specific + Focused

Don’t just post for the sake of posting. Why? Because you’ll be missing out on posting content that’s actually valuable to your audience. By spring cleaning your social, you’re removing what doesn’t work and focusing on what does—and being specific and focus works.

(Being random is soooo 2010.)

This month (April) is the perfect time of year to clear your social clutter, and get on track for being productive, efficient, and brilliant at what you do. What’s that old adage? Work smart, not hard?
